BoardSource Building Effective Nonprofit Boards
Clare Golla, Senior Vice President, ShoreBank
Nonprofit leaders are facing a "perfect storm" where credit markets are tight, foundation assets have shrunk, states are in deficit, corporate contributions are disappearing, individuals are feeling general economic stress, and all the while demands for health and welfare services and subsidies are shooting through the roof.
What can nonprofit leaders do to help ensure they have the necessary cash on hand to get their organizations through this? Is it possible to avoid some pitfalls – and perhaps even seize opportunities — during these challenging times? Beginning with an overview of current capital markets and how nonprofits fit into the picture, this discussion will identify opportunities available and on the horizon as the landscapes of philanthropy and the financial services sector change and adapt. Special attention will be paid to smart practices and tools that, used proactively, may help nonprofit leaders spot potential red flags, as well as optimize their organizations' cash management and strategies.
